Before you ship it
- Site name is required — it becomes the H1.
- No summary. The blockquote under the H1 is the line an answer engine is most likely to quote.
- Add at least one section with a valid link — a file with no links tells a crawler nothing.
Name a section "Optional" and crawlers on a tight budget know they can skip it. That is the one piece of the convention people miss.
The honest caveat
llms.txt is a proposed convention, not a standard anyone is obliged to honour. No major AI company has committed to reading it. It costs you one file to publish and it can't hurt — but if someone sells you llms.txt as the reason you'll get cited, they're overselling. Being cited on sites the model already trusts does more.
Getting cited is mostly about being on pages answer engines already read. That is what placements are for.
